Lenzing Expands Lyocell Fill Portfolio

The Lenzing Group has expanded its Lenzing Lyocell Fill portfolio within the Tencel family of fibers, introducing finer variants with various cut lengths tailored for home textiles and apparel. The expanded portfolio, certified by both the EU Ecolabel and ClimatePartner, offers enhanced thermal comfort, moisture control, and form-keeping properties. The new fibers, suitable for carding and blow-fill technology, enhance sensorial experiences in pillows, stuffed toys, and lightweight applications, while coarser fibers provide moisture control and bulkiness for comforters and quilts. Responsibly sourced and resource-efficiently produced, these fibers support diverse design needs and offer a sustainable alternative to fossil-based materials.

Glacial Threads: From Forests to Future Textiles | Lenzing Group

Lenzing has introduced an innovative concept that combines sustainable glacier protection with circularity for textiles. The project, titled “Glacial Threads: From Forests to Future Textiles,” involves using biodegradable LENZING™ fibers to create geotextiles that protect glaciers and prevent microplastic pollution. These geotextiles can be recycled at the end of their life cycle and transformed into new garments. The initiative aims to inspire sustainable practices and a circular economy in the textile industry.

Biodegradability of LENZING™ generic fibers - End of life in the natural cycle

The Lenzing Sustainability Report 2022 highlights the biodegradability of LENZING™ generic fibers. The report discusses how these fibers, derived from wood, can degrade in various environments, including soil, freshwater, and marine conditions. Scientific studies have shown that LENZING™ Lyocell fibers can degrade within 30 days under oceanic and aquatic conditions, while fossil-based fibers remain practically unchanged after more than 200 days. The report emphasizes the importance of biodegradability in preventing pollution and promoting a circular economy.

Operations

Our operation combines sustainable and efficient use of resources, characterized by integrating strategic phases within our production. The primary raw material – Eucalyptus – is sourced in our surrounding planted forests and used to produce Dissolving Wood Pulp (DWP) which is directly loaded to trains inside mill fences.

Forest Management

LD Florestal is responsible for the entire supply of eucalyptus for the process at LD Celulose (Mill). The entire process is conducted as part of an industrial production line, following meticulous planning for area expansion, crop rotation, maturation, harvesting, and delivery, according to the strategic and operational planning jointly conducted by LD Florestal and LD Celulose for the desired DWP production volume.

In addition to regular silviculture and wood supply activities, LD Florestal is also responsible for monitoring and combating fires, negotiating and evaluating new forest areas, and measuring the company’s biological assets.

Our Forestry combines productivity maximization and environmental impact reduction providing a reliable source of wood to fulfill mill demand in an economically efficient way.

Process Overview

Mill Operation

LD Celulose has established a new world-class Industrial Plant in Brazil that includes cutting-edge technology and infrastructure capable of effectively producing over 560k tons of dissolving wood pulp per year with a secured energy supply.
Black liquor generated in the process is burnt in the Recovery Boiler and biomass obtained in wood debarking processing is used to feed the Biomass Boiler. The steam generated in both boilers feeds the turbo generators to provide thermal and electrical energy to the process, the surplus of electrical energy is sold to the grid.

Process Overview

Logistic Operation

LD Celulose maintains a diversified and flexible pool of suppliers, backed by long-term contracts and robust logistics capabilities to ensure continuous operations. Mainly DWP is exported according to the process below, optimizing resilience combined with alternative models (e.g trucks and other ports).

The logistics system begins at fully integrated plant warehouse and rail system. Train wagons are loaded within the mill facilities.

At PORTOCEL (Espírito Santo), the cargo is received by the external warehouse team, handled, and stored.

Each unit is fully traceable through barcode control when loaded into break bulk vessels for international shipment.

Train Route – 1,400 km
